Large-scale Parallel Unstructured Mesh Computations for 3D High-lift Analysis

چکیده
A complete “geometry to drag-polar” analysis capability for three-dimensional high-lift configurations is described. The approach is based on the use of unstructured meshes in order to enable rapid turnaround for complicated geometries that arise in high-lift configurations. Special attention is devoted to creating a capability for enabling analyses on highly resolved grids. Unstructured meshes of several million vertices are initially generated on a work-station, and subsequently refined on a supercomputer. The flow is solved on these refined meshes on large parallel computers using an unstructured agglomeration multigrid algorithm. Good prediction of lift and drag throughout the range of incidences is demonstrated on a transport take-off configuration using up to 24.7 million grid points. The feasibility of using this approach in a production environment on existing parallel machines is demonstrated, as well as the scalability of the solver on machines using up to 1450 processors.

The majority of nite element models in structural engineering are composed of unstructured meshes. These unstructured meshes are often very large and require signiicant computational resources; hence they are excellent candidates for massively parallel computation. Parallel solution of the sparse matrices that arise from such meshes has been studied heavily, and many good algorithms have been d...
متن کاملBalancing the Communications and Computations in Parallel FEM Simulations on Unstructured Grids
We consider large scale finite element modeling on 3D unstructured grids. Large scale problems imply the use of parallel hardware and software. In general, the computational process on unstructured grids includes: mesh generation, mesh partitioning, optional mesh refinement, discretization, and the solution. The impact of the domain partitioning strategy on the performance of the discretization...
متن کاملLoad Balancing Unstructured Adaptive Grids for CFD Problems
Mesh adapt(on is a powerful tool for efficient unstructured-grid computations but causes load imbalance among processors on a parallel machine. A dynamic load balancing method is presented that balances the workload across all processors with a global view. After each parallel tetrahedral mesh adapt(on, the method first determines if the new mesh is sufficiently unbalanced to warrant a repartit...
متن کاملPLUM: Parallel Load Balancing for Unstructured Adaptive Meshes
Dynamic mesh adaption on unstructured grids is a powerful tool for computing large-scale problems that require grid modifications to efficiently resolve solution features. Unfortunately, an efficient parallel implementation is difficult to achieve, primarily due to the load imbalance created by the dynamically-changing nonuniform grid. To address this problem, we have developed PLUM, an automat...
